BLOCH ERNEST (1880-1959)

Compositeur américain d’origine suisse à qui la musique hébraïque doit ses lettres de noblesse au XXe siècle. Natif de Genève, Ernest Bloch y travaille la rythmique avec Émile Jaques-Dalcroze. Puis, il étudie le violon avec Eugène Ysaye à Bruxelles et la composition avec Ludwig Thuille à Francfort et à Munich. Ses premières œuvres s’inscrivent dans le courant postromantique du début du siècle (Macbeth , opéra, 1910). De 1911 à 1915, il est professeur de composition au Conservatoire de Genève. À cette époque, il intègre la musique hébraïque à sa propre création, trouvant un langage qui lui permet de traduire les aspirations de l’âme juive sans tomber dans la citation textuelle ou dans la paraphrase: Trois Poèmes juifs (1913), Schelomo pour violoncelle et orchestre, son œuvre la plus célèbre (1915-1916), Symphonie no 2 Israël (1912-1916), Baal Schem pour violon et orchestre (1923), Service sacré (1930-1933), Voix dans le désert (1936) sont autant de créations originales, profondes, intenses et très fortes.

Il se fixe aux États-Unis de 1916 à 1930 puis de 1938 à 1959, dirigeant notamment le Conservatoire de Cleveland (1920-1925) et enseignant à San Francisco et à Berkeley.

Sa démarche esthétique, toujours sous l’emprise de l’inspiration hébraïque, bascule du néo-romantisme vers le néo-classicisme avec quelques incursions dans un langage plus moderne (quarts de ton, musique sérielle) surtout destinées à mieux traduire les sources de sa création: Concertos grossos no 1 (1925) et no 2 «à la gloire de Bach» (1952), Concerto pour violon (1938). Il compose encore cinq quatuors à cordes, deux quintettes avec piano.
